Whether you're a seasoned knitter or a confident beginner looking for a rewarding project, these slippers are a joy to make and an even greater joy to wear. The dense, warm fabric and stretchy construction ensure comfort and durability, making them the perfect handmade gift or personal treat.

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • Weight: Worsted weight (#4) yarn, approximately 200-250 yards.
  • Sample Yarn: Malabrigo Rios in 'Piedras' (a heathered grey-brown) or any similar worsted weight yarn.

Needles & Notions

  • Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles (set of 2 straight needles or circular needle for magic loop).
  • Other: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers (optional, but helpful for pattern repeats).

Gauge

  • Gauge: 18 stitches x 28 rows = 4 inches in pattern stitch (slipped stitch pattern, relaxed after blocking).

Note: Achieving gauge is important for a proper fit. If your gauge is off, adjust needle size accordingly.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Sizes & Pattern Notes

  • Sizes: Small (Men's 7-8), Medium (Men's 9-10), Large (Men's 11-12). Instructions are written for Medium size; changes for Small and Large are in parentheses.
  • Construction: Slippers are worked flat from the toe to the heel, then seamed. The slipped stitch pattern creates a dense, warm fabric.
  • Edge Treatment: Use a stretchy cast-on and bind-off for comfort (e.g., long-tail cast-on and a stretchy bind-off like the sewn bind-off or Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind-off).

Stitch Pattern (Multiple of 2 + 1)

This pattern is the heart of the design. Repeat these 8 rows throughout the foot section.

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl.
  • Row 3: K1, *sl1 wyib (slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back), k1; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 4: Purl.
  • Row 5: Knit.
  • Row 6: Purl.
  • Row 7: K2, *sl1 wyib, k1; repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
  • Row 8: Purl.
  • Repeat Rows 1-8 for pattern.

Toe Section

  1. Cast on: Using a stretchy method, cast on 10 (12, 14) stitches.
  2. Row 1 (RS): Knit all stitches.
  3. Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  4. Row 3 (Increase Row): K1, M1L (make 1 left), knit to last stitch, M1R (make 1 right), k1. (12, 14, 16 stitches)
  5. Row 4: Purl all stitches.
  6. Repeat Rows 3-4 two more times. (16, 18, 20 stitches)

Tip: M1L and M1R are invisible increases. If you prefer, you can use a knit front and back (kfb) increase, but M1 is neater for this pattern.

Foot Section

  1. Begin pattern stitch: Start with Row 1 of the stitch pattern (RS row).
  2. Work even: Continue in pattern stitch until the piece measures 7 (8, 9) inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a WS row (Row 2, 4, 6, or 8).

Tip: Measure from the very tip of the toe. For a custom fit, measure your foot from toe to heel and subtract 1 inch for negative ease.

Heel Section

  1. Row 1 (RS, Decrease Row): K1, ssk (slip, slip, knit), knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog (knit two together), k1. (14, 16, 18 stitches)
  2. Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  3. Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times. (8, 10, 12 stitches)

Heel Flap

  1. Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1. (6, 8, 10 stitches)
  2. Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  3. Row 3: K1, ssk, k0 (2, 4), k2tog, k1. (4, 6, 8 stitches)
  4. Row 4: Purl all stitches.
  5. For Small size only: Bind off all stitches loosely.
  6. For Medium and Large sizes only: Repeat Rows 1-2 once more. (4, 4, 6 stitches). Bind off all stitches loosely.

Note: The heel flap creates a rounded, comfortable heel shape. Bind off very loosely to ensure the slipper can be put on easily.

Finishing

  1. Fold and seam: Fold the slipper in half with the right sides together (the wrong side facing out). Using a tapestry needle and matching yarn, seam the heel and the top of the foot using mattress stitch. This creates an invisible, sturdy seam.
  2. Weave in ends: Weave in all loose ends securely on the inside of the slipper.
  3. Block: Gently block the slippers to shape. Lightly mist with water and shape by hand, paying attention to the toe and heel curves. Allow to dry flat.

Second Slipper

Work identically to the first slipper. Enjoy your cozy, modern Driftwood Dune Slippers!
