Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (aran) yarn in 3 colors:
    • Color A (Deep Teal) – approximately 100g
    • Color B (Soft Mint) – approximately 100g
    • Color C (Lavender) – approximately 100g
  • Needles: US size 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving ends and seaming
  • Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Step-by-Step Instructions

Sizes & Notes

Sizes: Small (Medium/Large). Finished foot length: 8 (9/10) inches.

Notes: Slippers are worked flat from the toe up, then seamed along the back and bottom. The cuff is knit separately and sewn on. Read all instructions carefully before beginning.

TOE (make 2 identical pieces)

With Color A, cast on 10 (12/14) stitches.

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit all stitches.
  • Row 2: Purl all stitches.
  • Row 3 (Increase row): K1, M1L (make 1 left), knit to last stitch, M1R (make 1 right), k1. You now have 12 (14/16) stitches.
  • Row 4: Purl all stitches.
  • Repeat Rows 3-4 three more times. After the final repeat, you will have 18 (20/22) stitches.

FOOT

Work even in stockinette stitch (knit on RS rows, purl on WS rows) for 4 (5/6) inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a WS (purl) row.

HEEL

  • Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk (slip slip knit), knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog (knit two together), k1. You now have 16 (18/20) stitches.
  • Row 2: Purl all stitches.
  • Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times. After the final repeat, you will have 10 (12/14) stitches.
  • Next Row (RS): K1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. You now have 8 (10/12) stitches.
  • Next Row: Purl all stitches.
  • Bind off all stitches loosely. Do not cut yarn yet if you plan to seam immediately; otherwise, cut leaving a long tail for seaming.

CUFF (make 2 identical pieces)

  • With Color B, cast on 30 (34/38) stitches.
  • Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 2 inches, ending after a WS row.
  • Switch to Color C and continue in garter stitch for another 2 inches.
  • Bind off all stitches loosely. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for seaming.

FINISHING

  1. Seam the foot: Fold the toe/foot piece in half lengthwise with right sides together. Using mattress stitch and the long tail from bind-off, seam the back heel and the bottom of the foot, leaving the toe end open. Ensure the seam is neat and secure.
  2. Turn right side out.
  3. Prepare the cuff: Wrap the cuff around the ankle opening, overlapping the ends slightly. Sew the short ends of the cuff together using mattress stitch to form a ring.
  4. Attach the cuff: Sew the cuff to the top edge of the slipper using mattress stitch, stretching the cuff slightly to fit evenly around the opening. Ensure the color blocks align as desired (Color B at the bottom, Color C at the top).
  5. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. Repeat all steps for the second slipper.

Your Aurora Borealis Wrap Slippers are now complete! Slip them on and enjoy the cozy, custom fit and the beautiful color-blocked design inspired by the northern lights.
