Simple Crochet Square Coaster Pattern

Materials:

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn (gray, approximately 50g)
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical for this project, but aim for 4 inches = 10 stitches in single crochet.

Abbreviations:

  • CH - Chain
  • SC - Single Crochet
  • SL ST - Slip Stitch
  • ST - Stitch

Instructions:

Creating the Square:

  1. Foundation Row: Start with a slip knot, then chain 13 (for a 6-inch square). This will be the foundation of your coaster.
  2. Row 1: Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, SC in each chain across (total of 12 SC). Ch 1 and turn your work.
  3. Row 2: SC in the first stitch, continue to SC across until the end of the row (total of 12 SC). Ch 1 and turn.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until your piece measures 6 inches square. This should take about 12 rows.
  5. Last Row: Once your square is complete, SC across to finish your last row. Ch 1 and turn.
  6. Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the yarn through the last loop to secure it. Use your tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.

Optional Edging:

  1. For a finished look, you can add a simple border. After your last row, make 3 chains and then SC around the entire square.
  2. Join with a SL ST at the corner to complete the border.

Care Instructions:

Machine wash gentle and lay flat to dry to maintain its shape.

Your simple crochet square coaster is now ready to use! Enjoy your newfound skill and the satisfaction of creating something beautiful and practical.
