Crochet Sun Hat for Kids

Get ready for sunny days with this adorable and practical crochet sun hat for kids! Perfect for summer outings, picnics, or beach days, this hat not only keeps your little one sun-safe but also adds a playful touch to any outfit.

Materials:

  • 100g of cotton yarn (light weight, worsted)
  • Crochet hook size G/6 (4.0 mm)
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring tape

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical for this project, but aiming for 5 single crochet stitches per inch will help ensure the finished hat fits well.

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • rnd = round

Instructions:

Base of the Hat:

  1. Start with a slip knot, ch 4.
Join with a sl st to form a ring.
  2. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 10 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (10 st)
  3. Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (20 st)
  4. Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. Join. (30 st)
  5. Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. Join. (40 st)
  6. Rnd 5: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat around. Join. (50 st)
  7. Continue increasing in this manner until you reach a total of approximately 60-70 stitches, depending on the desired size.

Body of the Hat:

  1. Switch to doing only sc without increasing for 4-5 rounds to create the sides of the hat. Remember to join each round.
  2. Once you have reached the desired height (4-5 inches from the base), start working on the brim.

Brim of the Hat:

  1. Ch 1, *sc in next st, ch 2, skip next st* repeat around. Join.
  2. Work an additional round of sc in each ch-2 space to create a solid edge on the brim.
  3. Finish with another round of sl st to secure the brim.

Finishing Touches:

  1. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Use the tail to weave in any loose ends.
  2. Optionally, you can add a decorative band around the base of the hat using a contrasting yarn color for an extra pop.

Congratulations! You've created a lovely crochet sun hat for your little one! Adjust the size as necessary and enjoy the sunny adventures ahead.
