Chunky Textured Crochet Blanket

Materials

  • Chunky plush yarn in bright red (approximately 6-8 balls, 100g each)
  • Crochet hook size 10 mm (N/P-15)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

For this project, gauging isn’t critical, but 10 stitches = 4 inches in pattern. Adjust your hook size if necessary to maintain this gauge.

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sp: space
  • inc: increase (2 stitches in the same stitch)
  • dec: decrease (2 stitches into 1 stitch)

Instructions

Foundation Chain

Start by making a foundation chain of 90 stitches (or as wide as you want your blanket). This will create the width of your blanket. Ensure it’s not too tight; a loose chain will make it easier to work into.

Row 1

  1. In the 4th chain from the hook, work a double crochet (dc).
  2. Continue working 1 dc in each chain across the row until you reach the end.
  3. Turn your work. You should have 88 dc stitches.

Row 2

  1. Chain 2 (this counts as the first dc).
  2. In the next stitch, work 1 dc.
  3. Skip the next stitch, and in the following stitch, work 2 dc (this creates the texture).
  4. Repeat the pattern of skipping 1 stitch and then 2 dc into the next stitch across the row.
  5. Continue this until you reach the end of the row, ending with a sl st into the top of the initial ch 2.

Repeat Rows

Continue repeating Row 2 for every subsequent row. Your blanket will gradually grow in size and develop a lovely textured look. Feel free to adjust the number of rows based on your desired length.

Finishing

  1. Once your blanket reaches your desired length (approximately 60 inches), end with a sl st.
  2. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in.
  3. Using your tapestry needle, weave in all the loose ends securely.

Caring for Your Blanket

This blanket can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry. It’s always good to refer to the yarn label for specific washing instructions.
