Step-by-Step Instructions

Backpack Body (worked flat, then seamed)

Panel 1 (Front)

With MC, cast on 40 stitches.

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl.
  • Rows 3-6: Repeat Rows 1-2.
  • Row 7 (RS): K4, *C6F (slip 3 stitches to cable needle, hold in front, k3 from left needle, k3 from cable needle), k4; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 8 (WS): Purl.
  • Row 9 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 10 (WS): Purl.
  • Row 11 (RS): K1, *MB (make bobble: k1, p1, k1, p1, k1 all in same stitch, then pass 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th stitches over the 1st), k7; repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
  • Row 12 (WS): Purl.
  • Rows 13-16: Repeat Rows 9-12.

Repeat Rows 7-16 until piece measures 10 inches from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row. Bind off all stitches.

Panel 2 (Back)

Work same as Panel 1.

Panel 3 (Bottom)

With MC, cast on 40 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch (knit RS, purl WS) for 4 inches. Bind off.

Side Panels (make 2)

With MC, cast on 10 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch for 10 inches. Bind off.

Assembly

Sew bottom panel to front and back panels using mattress stitch. Sew side panels to front and back, creating a box shape. Turn right side out.

Flap (worked flat)

With CC1, cast on 40 stitches.

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl.
  • Row 3 (RS): K2, *C4B (slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold in back, k2 from left needle, k2 from cable needle), k2; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 4 (WS): Purl.
  • Rows 5-8: Repeat Rows 1-2.

Repeat Rows 3-8 until piece measures 6 inches from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.

  • Next Row (RS): K2tog across row (20 stitches).
  • Next Row (WS): Purl.

Bind off.

Straps (make 2)

With CC2 and double-pointed needles, cast on 8 stitches. Divide evenly over 3 needles (3, 3, 2). Work in Stockinette stitch in the round (knit every round) for 24 inches. Bind off.

Finishing

Sew flap to back panel, aligning top edges. Sew straps to back panel at top and bottom edges, spacing 4 inches apart. Weave in all ends. Optionally, add a button or toggle closure under the flap.

Lining (optional)

Cut fabric to match backpack shape, sew, and insert. Hand-stitch lining to inside of backpack.
