Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in cream color
• Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations

• CO: Cast on
• BO: Bind off
• k: Knit
• p: Purl
• RS: Right side
• WS: Wrong side

Instructions

Center Square

1. CO 50 stitches.
2. Row 1 (RS): k2, *p2, k6; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
3. Row 2 (WS): p2, *k2, p6; repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2.
4. Repeat Rows 1-2 until the piece measures 12 inches.

First Border

1. Pick up and knit stitches along one side of the square.
2. Row 1 (RS): *k2, p2; repeat from * to end.
3. Row 2 (WS): *p2, k2; repeat from * to end.
4. Continue in pattern until border measures 2 inches.

Second Border

1. Repeat the border instructions on the remaining three sides of the center square.

Outer Border

1. Pick up and knit along the edges of the entire piece.
2. Row 1 (RS): k across.
3. Row 2 (WS): p across.
4. Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times for a total of 4 rows.

Finishing

• BO all stitches.
• Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
