Cozy Knitted Hat and Mitts Set

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (100% wool recommended) in two colors: mustard (for hat and mitts) and light blue (for scarf)
  • US size 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles (16” long)
  • US size 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles (for mitts)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
  • Scissors

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • st = stitch
  • k2tog = knit two stitches together
  • CO = cast on
  • BO = bind off
  • Inc = increase
  • pm = place marker
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side

Hat Instructions

  1. CO 80 stitches using the mustard yarn. Place a stitch marker to denote the beginning of the round.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches.
  3. Work in *k2, p2* ribbing for 12 rounds.
  4. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every round) and continue for 8 more rounds.
  5. Begin decreasing:
    • Round 1: *k8, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 2: knit all stitches.
    • Round 3: *k7, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 4: knit all stitches.
    • Round 5: *k6, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 6: knit all stitches.
    • Round 7: *k5, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 8: knit all stitches.
    • Round 9: *k4, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 10: knit all stitches.
    • Round 11: *k3, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 12: knit all stitches.
    • Round 13: *k2, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 14: knit all stitches.
    • Round 15: *k1, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 16: k2tog all around.
  6. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in ends.

Mitts Instructions

  1. CO 40 stitches using the mustard yarn. Place a stitch marker to denote the beginning of the round.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches.
  3. Work in *k2, p2* ribbing for 10 rounds.
  4. Switch to stockinette stitch and continue for 12 rounds.
  5. Begin thumb opening:
    • Next round: k30, turn and work flat on the last 10 stitches (this creates the thumb opening).
    • Work 10 rows back and forth on these 10 stitches.
    • After the 10th row, pick up and knit 10 stitches from the side of the thumb opening and join back to the main body.
    • Continue in stockinette stitch for another 8 rounds.
  6. Begin decreasing for the mitts:
    • Round 1: *k10, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 2: knit all stitches.
    • Round 3: *k9, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 4: knit all stitches.
    • Round 5: *k8, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 6: knit all stitches until 10 stitches remain.
    • Round 7: *k1, k2tog* repeat around.
    • Round 8: k2tog all around.
  7. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the mitt. Weave in ends.
  8. Repeat for the second mitt.

Finishing
