Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sp = space
  • inc = increase (2 stitches in one stitch)

Instructions

Making the Granny Squares

  1. Start with a slip knot on your hook using the first color (Blue). Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc into the ring, then *ch 2, work 3 dc into the ring*. Repeat from * to * 2 more times. You should have 4 groups of 3 dc separated by ch-2 spaces. Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch-3.
  3. Cut the yarn and pull through the last loop. Change to the next color (Green), and attach to any ch-2 space from the previous round.
  4. Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc in the same sp, then *ch 2, work 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3.
  5. Cut Green yarn and repeat step 4 for Yellow, then finish with White for the final round, following the same instructions until you have a total of 4 rounds per granny square.
  6. Make a total of 20 granny squares in various color combinations.

Joining the Squares

  1. Lay out the squares in a pattern that you like (5 squares across and 4 squares down works well).
  2. Using the Cream yarn, start joining the squares using the whip stitch method. Place two squares right sides together and stitch through the back loops of the corners to join.
  3. Continue to join until all squares are connected, forming a large blanket.

Finishing Touches

  1. Once all squares are joined, create a border around the entire blanket. Start in any corner, chain 1, sc along the edge of the blanket, placing 3 sc in the corners to make it round.
  2. When you reach the end, join with a slip stitch to your first sc. Cut the yarn and weave in all ends with the tapestry needle.
