Basic Knit Beanie Pattern

This warm and comfortable beanie is an excellent starter project for novice knitters. With its simple construction and soft texture, you'll want to make one in every color!

Materials:

• 1 skein of worsted weight yarn (approx. 100g) in light grey
• Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles (either straight or circular, 16 inches for circular)
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors
• Measuring tape

Gauge:

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Abbreviations:

• CO = Cast On
• k = knit
• p = purl
• st(s) = stitch(es)
• rep = repeat
• BO = Bind Off

Instructions:

1. Cast On: CO 80 stitches onto your needle.
2. Ribbing (optional): Work in k1, p1 ribbing for the first 2 inches to create a stretchy brim.
3. After completing the ribbing, switch to stockinette stitch:
• Row 1: Knit all stitches (right side).
• Row 2: Purl all stitches (wrong side).
4. Continue to repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures 8 inches from the cast-on edge.
5. Shaping the Crown:
1. Row 1: *K8, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (72 stitches remain).
2. Row 2: Purl.
3. Row 3: *K7, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (64 stitches remain).
4. Row 4: Purl.
5. Row 5: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (56 stitches remain).
6. Row 6: Purl.
7. Row 7: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (48 stitches remain).
8. Row 8: Purl.
9. Row 9: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (40 stitches remain).
10. Row 10: Purl.
11. Row 11: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (32 stitches remain).
12. Row 12: Purl.
13. Row 13: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (24 stitches remain).
14. Row 14: Purl.
15. Row 15: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (16 stitches remain).
16. Row 16: Purl.
17. Row 17: K2tog across (8 stitches remain).
18. Row 18: Purl across (8 stitches remain).
6. Bind Off: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 8 stitches and pull tight to close the top. Weave in any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
7. Finishing: Block gently if desired, and your beanie is ready to wear!
