Adorable Cow-Themed Baby Hat and Blanket Set

Materials

  • Soft white yarn (approx. 200g)
  • Brown yarn (approx. 20g)
  • Size 5 mm (US 8) knitting needles
  • Size 4 mm (US 6) knitting needles
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Gauge

16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in stocking stitch with size 5 mm needles.

Abbreviations

  • CO: Cast On
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • St: Stitch
  • Rep: Repeat
  • RSS: Reverse Stocking Stitch

Instructions

Baby Blanket

  1. Using size 5 mm needles, CO 80 stitches.
  2. Knit 6 rows in garter stitch (K every row) for the border.
  3. Change to stocking stitch (K one row, P one row) and continue until the blanket measures 28 inches in length.
  4. Remember to keep a stitch marker at the beginning to track your rows.
  5. Once you've reached the desired length, switch back to garter stitch for the last 6 rows before binding off.
  6. BO all stitches and fasten off.

Baby Hat

  1. Using size 4 mm needles, CO 48 stitches.
  2. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 6 rows to create the brim.
  3. Switch to size 5 mm needles and continue in stocking stitch until the hat measures 5 inches from the CO edge.
  4. Begin decreasing for the top of the hat:
    • Row 1: K2, K2tog, repeat to end (36 st)
    • Row 2: P across (36 st)
    • Row 3: K1, K2tog, repeat to end (24 st)
    • Row 4: P across (24 st)
    • Row 5: K2, K2tog, repeat to end (18 st)
    • Row 6: P across (18 st)
    • Row 7: K1, K2tog, repeat to end (12 st)
    • Row 8: P across (12 st)
    • Row 9: K2tog until last st (6 st)
    • Row 10: P across (6 st)
    • Row 11: K2tog until 3 st remain, then K2tog to finish (2 st)
    • Cut a long tail and pull it through the last stitch to gather the top, weave in ends.
  5. To make the ears and horns:
    • For ears, CO 6 stitches. Row 1: K2, P2, K2. Row 2: K across. Repeat Rows 1-2 for 4 more times. BO.
    • For horns, CO 4 stitches. K1, K2tog, K1 (2 st). BO. Thread yarn through these stitches.
  6. Attach ears and horns to the hat using a yarn needle.

Finishing

Weave in any loose ends on both the blanket and the hat. Your adorable cow-themed baby hat and blanket are now ready!
