Striped Knit Socks

Materials

• 1 ball of self-striping sock yarn (approx. 100g)
• Double-pointed needles (DPNs) size US 2 (3.0 mm)
• Stitch marker
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

• CO: Cast On
• K: Knit
• P: Purl
• K2tog: Knit two stitches together (decrease)
• Sts: Stitches
• WS: Wrong Side
• RS: Right Side

Instructions

1. Cuff

1. Using DPNs, CO 64 sts.
2. Divide the stitches evenly onto 3 needles (21, 21, 22), adjusting as necessary to have equal stitches. Use the 4th needle to join in the round.
3. Place a stitch marker to signify the beginning of the round.
4. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 10 rounds.

2. Leg

1. Change to knit stitch and work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the leg measures 6 inches from the cuff.

3. Heel

1. Work the heel flap by knitting back and forth on the first 32 stitches for 18 rows, creating a square flap.
2. Turn the heel by following these steps:
   • K20, K2tog, K1, turn.
   • Slip 1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
   • Repeat these steps until all heel stitches are used up, ending with a knit row.
3. Pick up and knit 16 gusset stitches along the sides of the heel flap.
4. Knit across the remaining 32 stitches on the top of the foot.
5. Now you should have a total of 64 stitches again.

4. Gusset

1. Work in stockinette stitch, decreasing on the first and last stitch of the round every other round until you have 32 stitches remaining.

5. Foot

1. Continue in stockinette stitch until the foot measures 7 inches from the heel turn, or to your desired foot length.

6. Toe

1. Begin the toe by decreasing every other round: K2, K2tog around. (48 stitches)
2. Next round: K1, K2tog around. (32 stitches)
3. Final round: K2tog around until 8 stitches remain.
4. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Use the tapestry needle to thread it through the remaining stitches and pull tight.

7. Finishing

1. Weave in all loose ends using the tapestry needle.
2. Block the socks gently to shape them.
