Crochet African Violet Potted Plant

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in purple (flower)
  • Worsted weight yarn in green (leaves)
  • Worsted weight yarn in cream or beige (pot)
  • Yellow embroidery floss or yarn (for flower centers)
  • Crochet hook (size G/4.0 mm)
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

Not crucial for this project, but aim for 4 inches = 16 stitches in single crochet.

Abbreviations

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • inc - increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • st - stitch
  • rnd - round
  • FO - fasten off

Instructions

Pot Base

  1. Using cream yarn, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6 stitches)
  3. Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 stitches)
  4. Round 3: *Sc in next st, inc in next st*; repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  5. Round 4: *Sc in next 2 st, inc in next st*; repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
  6. Round 5: *Sc in next 3 st, inc in next st*; repeat from * to * around. (30 stitches)
  7. Rounds 6-10: Sc in each st around. (30 stitches each round)
  8. Round 11: *Sc in next 3 st, decrease (sc2tog) over next 2 st*; repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
  9. Round 12: *Sc in next 2 st, decrease over next 2 st*; repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  10. Add fiberfill to shape the pot, then continue to decrease.
  11. Round 13: *Sc in next st, decrease over next 2 st*; repeat from * to * around. (12 stitches)
  12. Round 14: Decrease around. (6 stitches)
  13. FO and weave in ends.

Leaves (Make 4)

  1. Using green yarn, ch 10.
  2. Row 1: Starting from the second ch from hook, sc in next 9 ch. (9 stitches)
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *dc in next st, sc in next st*; repeat from * to * until you reach the end. (9 stitches)
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, *sc in next st, dc in next st*; repeat from * to * until you reach the end. (9 stitches)
  5. Ch 1, FO leaving a long tail for sewing.

Flowers (Make 3)

  1. Using purple yarn, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6 stitches)
  3. Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 stitches)
  4. Round 3: *Sc in next st, inc in next st*; repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  5. Round 4: *Sc in next 2 st, inc in next st*; repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
  6. Round 5: FO and leave a long tail.
  7. Use yellow floss to sew in the center of each flower, making French knots or small stitches.

Assembly

  1. Sew the leaves to the top of the pot, positioning them all around the rim.
  2. Attach the flowers, positioning them in between the leaves.
  3. Secure all pieces and weave in any remaining ends.
