Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in yellow, pink, green, black, and orange
  • Crochet hook size suitable for your yarn (e.g., 4mm)
  • Yarn needle
  • Polyester fiberfill (for the head)

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • inc: increase (2 sc in 1 stitch)
  • dec: decrease (sc 2 together)
  • sl st: slip stitch

Instructions

Bird Head

  1. With yellow yarn, make a magic ring. Round 1: 6 sc in the ring. (6)
  2. Round 2: Inc around. (12)
  3. Round 3: (Sc in next st, inc) around. (18)
  4. Round 4-5: Sc around. (18)
  5. Round 6: (Sc in next st, dec) around. (12)
  6. Stuff the head lightly with fiberfill.
  7. Round 7: Dec around. (6)
  8. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Cheek

  1. With pink yarn, make a magic ring. Round 1: 6 sc in the ring. (6)
  2. Round 2: Inc around. (12)
  3. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew onto the side of the head.

Beak

  1. With orange yarn, ch 3.
  2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, sc in next st. (2)
  3. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Attach to the head.

Eyes

  1. Using black yarn, embroider two small eyes above the cheek.

Bookmark Strap

  1. With green yarn, ch 50 (or desired length).
  2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (49)
  3. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Leafy Tail

  1. With green yarn, ch 6, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, 2 dc in last ch, ch 3, sl st in same ch as last dc. Join leaf to the end of the bookmark strap.
  2. Repeat for 2 more leaves, spacing them evenly.

Assembly

  1. Sew the head securely to one end of the strap.
  2. Weave in all ends.
