Chunky Crochet Basket Pattern
This pattern will guide you in creating a stylish and functional chunky crochet basket. This project is ideal for beginners and can be completed in a few hours.
Materials Needed
- 1.5 - 2 skeins of bulky yarn (we recommend a soft acrylic in maroon)
- Size N (10 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Gauge
Approximately 8 stitches and 7 rows = 4 inches in single crochet. Adjust your hook size if necessary to meet this gauge.
Abbreviations
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
- st(s) - stitch(es)
Instructions
Base of the Basket
- Make a slip knot on your hook.
- Ch 4. Join with a sl st to form a ring.
- *Ch 1, 8 sc into the ring.* Join with a sl st to the first sc to close the round. (8 sc)
- Next Round: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sc)
- Next Round: Ch 1, *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in the next st.* Repeat around. Join. (24 sc)
- Next Round: Ch 1, *1 sc in the next 2 st, 2 sc in the next st.* Repeat around. Join. (32 sc)
- Continue increasing (adding one more single crochet between the increases) until you reach 64 sc in total. This should take several more rounds, around 6-8 rounds depending on your tension.
Body of the Basket
- Once you reach 64 stitches, work in rounds without increasing. Simply continue to sc in each stitch for approximately 8-10 more rounds, or until the basket reaches your desired height (about 8-10 inches).
Finishing
- After reaching your desired height, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
- Skip the last stitch and pull the yarn through the loop on your hook to fasten off.
- Weave in any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
- Optional: Fold the top edge of the basket down to create a cuff for added style.
Congratulations! You’ve created a lovely chunky crochet basket that can be used anywhere in your home. Fill it with yarn, magazines, or use it as a decorative element on a shelf. This project also makes a thoughtful gift for friends or family!
