Baby Crown Hat Pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: Bulky weight yarn in light beige (approximately 100 yards)
  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in white (for crown tips, optional)
  • Needles: Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needles
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Gauge

12 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

  • CO: Cast on
  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • MP: Marker placement (use stitch marker)
  • K2tog: Knit two stitches together (decrease)
  • P2tog: Purl two stitches together (decrease)
  • Sts: Stitches

Instructions

Hat

  1. CO 48 stitches in light beige yarn.
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
  3. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.
  4. Round 1: K all stitches.
  5. Round 2: K2, P2 around (this creates a ribbed effect). Repeat Round 2 for 10 rounds.
  6. Next, work in stockinette stitch (K all stitches) until the piece measures 5 inches from the cast-on edge.
  7. Decrease for the crown:
      Round 1: *K6, K2tog* repeat around (you will have 42 stitches left).
      Round 2: K all stitches.
      Round 3: *K5, K2tog* repeat around (you will have 36 stitches left).
      Round 4: K all stitches.
      Round 5: *K4, K2tog* repeat around (you will have 30 stitches left).
      Round 6: K all stitches.
      Round 7: *K3, K2tog* repeat around (you will have 24 stitches left).
      Round 8: K all stitches.
      Round 9: *K2, K2tog* repeat around (you will have 18 stitches left).
      Round 10: K all stitches.
      Round 11: *K1, K2tog* repeat around (you will have 12 stitches left).
      Round 12: K2tog around (you will have 6 stitches left).
  8. Cut the yarn leaving a long tail, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Ear Flaps

  1. CO 10 stitches using the same light beige yarn.
  2. Row 1: K all stitches.
  3. Row 2: P all stitches.
  4. Row 3: K all stitches.
  5. Row 4: P all stitches.
  6. Row 5: K all stitches. On the last stitch, CO 2. Turn the work.
  7. Row 6: P to the end, working the 2 CO stitches as P stitches.
  8. Row 7: K all stitches.
  9. Row 8: P all stitches.
  10. Row 9: K2tog, K to last 2 sts, K2tog. (you will have 6 stitches left).
  11. Row 10: P all stitches.
  12. Row 11: K all stitches. (Continue decreasing while alternating purl and knit rows until you have 2 stitches left.)
  13. Cut the yarn and thread through the last remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in ends.
  14. Repeat for the second ear flap.

Adding Crown Tips

  1. Using the white yarn, CO 3 stitches.
  2. Row 1: K all stitches.
  3. Row 2: K2tog, K1 (2 stitches left).
  4. Row 3: K2tog (1 stitch left). Cut yarn and pull through the remaining stitch.
  5. Make 3 crowns using the same method. Sew these tips to the crown part of the hat.

Finishing
