Anonymous July 30, 2026

Introduction: The Alpine Ridge Scarf

Wrap yourself in the cozy, geometric texture of the Alpine Ridge Scarf, a modern knit that mimics the rugged beauty of mountain peaks. This free pattern uses a clever combination of slipped stitches and purls to create a dense, reversible fabric that's both stylish and warm. Perfect for beginners looking to expand their skills, this scarf features a woven, textured look that is different but equally beautiful on each side. The alternating color bands add visual interest without complicated colorwork, making it a satisfying project for knitters of all levels.

Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following materials to ensure a smooth knitting experience:

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (Category 4). Shown in Knit Picks Swish Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool) in 'Alpine Heather' (Color A - 2 skeins) and 'Mist' (Color B - 1 skein). Approximately 300 yards of Color A and 150 yards of Color B.
  • Needles: US Size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles (straight or circular for working flat).
  • Gauge: 20 stitches x 28 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, after blocking.
  • Other: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors, blocking mats and pins (optional but recommended).

Pattern Notes

  • The scarf is worked flat, back and forth.
  • The slipped stitches create a woven, textured look. The fabric is dense and reversible, with a different but equally beautiful pattern on each side.
  • Always slip stitches purlwise unless otherwise stated.
  • When slipping stitches, keep the yarn on the correct side (wyib = yarn in back, wyif = yarn in front) to maintain the pattern.

Instructions

Step 1: Cast On
With Color A, CO 40 stitches using your preferred method (long-tail cast on works well).

Step 2: Work the Pattern Rows
The pattern consists of an 8-row repeat. Follow each row carefully, paying attention to the slipped stitches.

Row 1 (RS): K2, *Sl1 wyib, K1, P1, K1, Sl1 wyib, K2; rep from * to end.

Row 2 (WS): P2, *Sl1 wyif, P1, K1, P1, Sl1 wyif, P2; rep from * to end.

Row 3: K2, *K1, Sl1 wyib, P1, Sl1 wyib, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Row 4: P2, *P1, Sl1 wyif, K1, Sl1 wyif, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2.

Row 5: K2, *Sl1 wyib, P1, K1, P1, Sl1 wyib, K2; rep from * to end.

Row 6: P2, *Sl1 wyif, P1, K1, P1, Sl1 wyif, P2; rep from * to end.

Row 7: K2, *K1, Sl1 wyib, P1, Sl1 wyib, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Row 8: P2, *P1, Sl1 wyif, K1, Sl1 wyif, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2.

Repeat Rows 1-8 for pattern.

Color Sequence

Follow this color sequence to create the alternating bands:

  • Work Rows 1-8 with Color A for 4 inches.
  • Switch to Color B and work Rows 1-8 for 2 inches.
  • Switch back to Color A and work for 4 inches.
  • Continue alternating between Color A (4 inches) and Color B (2 inches) until scarf measures approximately 58 inches from cast-on edge, ending with a Color A section.

Tip: To switch colors, simply cut the old color leaving a 6-inch tail, and start the new color at the beginning of a RS row. Weave in ends later.

Bind Off

Bind off loosely in pattern on a RS row as follows: K2, *Sl1 wyib, K1, P1, K1, Sl1 wyib, K2; rep from * to end, binding off each stitch as you go. To bind off, knit the first two stitches, then pass the first stitch over the second. Continue knitting one stitch and passing the previous stitch over until all stitches are bound off. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail, and pull through the last loop.

Finishing

  • Weave in all ends neatly using a tapestry needle. Weave ends into the wrong side of the fabric, following the path of the yarn to make them invisible.
  • Block the scarf gently to even out the stitches and enhance the texture. To block, soak the scarf in lukewarm water with a small amount of wool wash for 15-20 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), then lay flat on a blocking mat or towel. Gently stretch to the desired dimensions and pin if needed. Allow to dry completely.

Your Alpine Ridge Scarf is now complete! Enjoy the cozy, textured warmth of your handmade accessory, perfect for adding a touch of modern style to any winter outfit.
