Abbreviations
- CO: Cast on
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- St(s): Stitch(es)
- Rnd: Round
- RS: Right side
- WS: Wrong side
Instructions
- Cast On: CO 72 stitches onto your circular needle. Make sure to join in the round carefully, being cautious not to twist the stitches.
- Join and Start Ribbing: Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. Work the first round in a ribbing pattern: *K2, P2; repeat from * to the end of the round.
- Continue Ribbing: Repeat the ribbing pattern (K2, P2) for a total of 10 more rounds (11 rounds total of ribbing). The hat should start to gather and form a tube shape.
- Begin Decreasing: After completing the ribbing, switch to the DPNs. Start your decreasing rounds as follows:
- Round 1: *K2, P2; repeat until 2 stitches remain before the marker, K2tog (knit two together) to decrease; repeat from * around.
- Round 2: Knit every stitch.
- Round 3: *K1, P2; repeat until 1 stitch remains before the marker, K2tog; repeat from * around.
- Round 4: Knit every stitch.
- Round 5: *P2, K2tog; repeat from * around until you have a total of 18 stitches left.
- Final Decrease: Switch to the DPNs if necessary. Begin a final round of K2tog across the remaining stitches until you have 9 stitches left.
- Finishing: Cut a long tail of yarn (about 8 inches). With a yarn needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in all loose ends securely.
Final Measurements
This beanie should fit an average adult head size, approximately 20-22 inches in circumference.
